Parrot lifespan: the answer depends on the species
Parrots can live from roughly one human chapter to several of them. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists an average lifespan of 5–10 years for budgies, up to 20 for cockatiels, 30–50 for African greys, 40–50 for Amazons, 25–50 for cockatoos, and 30–60 for macaws. Those are planning figures, not warranties.
That distinction matters because parrot-age claims online tend to mix three different things: an average, a typical planning range, and the oldest documented individual. Saying a cockatoo once reached a remarkable age does not mean every cockatoo should. It is the bird equivalent of using the world's oldest person to estimate your retirement date—fascinating, but financially adventurous.
This guide uses the current Merck table for common companion-bird ranges and a peer-reviewed study of more than 83,000 captive-parrot records to explain what the numbers can and cannot tell you.
Lifespan chart for common pet parrots
The figures below reproduce the wording and values in Merck's current Popular Pet Birds table rather than “rounding up” a species because somebody met a very old bird once.

These are group-level figures. “Macaw” can mean birds with very different body sizes and life histories, while “cockatoo” covers multiple genera and species. Average, median, maximum: three numbers wearing one trench coat
An average lifespan summarizes a population. A median is the point where half the recorded lifespans fall below and half above. A maximum is the oldest recorded individual in a dataset. These numbers answer different questions.
The largest broad study available analyzed 83,212 usable records covering 260 parrot species in the International Species Information System, a database supplied by zoos and other institutions. Researchers Young, Hobson, Bingaman Lackey, and Wright reported that larger species generally lived longer. Their highest maximum was 92 years for a salmon-crested cockatoo, but only 12 of 260 species had any recorded individual live beyond 50.
The study's bigger lesson was less glamorous: median lifespans were generally shorter than popular claims implied. Half the species in the database had never produced a recorded individual older than 22, and only 30% had a median adult lifespan of at least 10 years after the researchers restricted analysis to birds that survived juvenile mortality.
That does not mean your macaw has a ten-year life expectancy. The dataset combined many species, was based on institutional collections rather than pet households, and had the limitations the authors discuss. It does mean that an exceptional maximum should not masquerade as an everyday expectation. Use a responsible species range for planning, then accept that no chart can predict one bird's future.
Why larger parrots often live longer
Across the zoo-record study, adult mass was a useful predictor: larger parrots generally had longer maximum and median lifespans. Other research has examined how ecology, diet type, habitat, and behavior may relate to longevity across parrot lineages. The honest answer, however, is not a neat slogan about “efficient flight metabolism.” Parrot longevity varies even among related species, and body size explains a pattern rather than every individual case.
The pattern is still useful at the kitchen-table level. Bringing home a budgie usually calls for a plan measured in years; bringing home a young Amazon, African grey, or macaw can require a plan spanning moves, careers, retirement, and a future caretaker. A large parrot is not just a pet purchase. It is succession planning with feathers.
Do captive parrots live longer than wild parrots?
Do not treat “captivity adds years” as a fact for every species. A protected household can remove predators, severe weather, and food scarcity. It can also introduce poor nutrition, inactivity, chronic stress, toxic fumes, collisions, unsafe pets, and delayed veterinary care.
Wild lifespan is difficult to measure because researchers often cannot know an adult bird's exact age, and field studies may be short compared with a parrot's potential life. The authors of the 83,000-record study explicitly noted that comparing their captive data with wild populations was difficult because relatively few wild species had been studied for long enough.
Captivity is therefore a set of conditions, not a longevity coupon. Good husbandry can reduce avoidable risk; a cage by itself does not confer immortality.
What owners can actually control
No care routine guarantees a particular birthday. It can, however, support health and reduce preventable hazards.
Build the diet with a bird-qualified veterinarian
Merck's 2026 review says poor diets remain a major problem in pet birds. A seed-heavy diet is high in fat and can be nutritionally incomplete; over time, that pattern contributes to obesity, fatty liver disease and other malnutrition-related illness.
The current Merck feeding guide describes species-appropriate pellets or crumbles as the dietary base, with small amounts of fresh vegetables and fruit. Seeds and nuts fit better as a smaller component or training treat than as the whole menu. Exact proportions and conversion speed still belong to the bird's avian veterinarian; never switch abruptly or let a bird starve while waiting for it to accept pellets. Established avian-care guidance is to avoid chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, salty or sugary junk food, milk products, onions, avocado and apple seeds. The Association of Avian Veterinarians' household-danger guide also names garlic, xylitol, and pits or seeds from cherries, peaches, apricots, plums and apples; those fruit parts contain cyanogenic compounds. If a suspected toxin is eaten, contact an avian veterinarian or animal poison service promptly. Do not wait for symptoms or induce vomiting.
Make movement and foraging part of the day
A large, appropriately spaced cage is the home base, not the whole exercise plan. Provide safe perches of varied diameters so the feet are not loaded in one identical position all day, plus suitable opportunities to climb, fly or move as health and environment allow. Rotate chewable and foraging activities rather than filling every inch with furniture. Avoid snags, sharp edges, loose fibers and hardware the bird can dismantle.
Establish veterinary care before trouble
The Association of Avian Veterinarians says birds benefit from annual checkups and emphasizes that they hide illness. Ask your veterinarian what schedule fits the species, age, medical history, and current condition. Keep the clinic and after-hours number where another caregiver can find it.
Call promptly for changes in appetite, weight, voice or behavior. Particularly recognizable warnings include:
- a fluffed or puffed posture that persists;
- tail-bobbing, labored breathing or open-mouth breathing;
- droppings that change in color, consistency or volume;
- sudden quietness in a normally active bird;
- lethargy, or a marked drop in appetite;
- sitting low or on the cage floor.

Remove household hazards
Birds have sensitive respiratory systems. The AAV warns about fumes from heated PTFE products and lists nonstick cookware, some air fryers, irons, self-cleaning ovens, and heat lamps among possible sources. Smoke, aerosols, scented products, paint, solvents, and strong cleaners can also be dangerous.
Supervise out-of-cage time. Stop fans, secure windows and doors, cover or make glass safer, close open toilets and water containers, protect electrical cords, keep toxic houseplants out of reach, and separate predators such as cats and dogs. The same AAV guide notes that a number of common plants are toxic if ingested, so check any plant a bird can reach. If inhalation exposure occurs or the bird shows breathing difficulty, weakness, incoordination, or collapse, seek emergency veterinary help.
Make a care plan for the bird you may become
For a potentially long-lived parrot, write down more than “family will handle it.” Record the bird's veterinarian, medications, diet, sleep and handling routines, identification, triggers, preferred emergency clinic, and medical files. Ask a specific person whether they are willing and able to take over. Discuss legal and financial arrangements with a qualified local professional; rules vary and a casual promise may not be enforceable.
Review the plan after moves, relationship changes, illness, or every few years. Also plan for the bird aging with you: cage access, perch height, lighting, mobility, and veterinary needs may change. The goal is not to predict whether an Amazon reaches 43. It is to ensure that year 43, if it comes, is not a surprise nobody prepared for.
Bottom line
Parrot lifespan is species-specific and uncertain. Current veterinary ranges put budgies around 5–10 years on average, cockatiels up to 20, African greys at 30–50, Amazons at 40–50, cockatoos at 25–50, and macaws at 30–60. Exceptional records can be much older, while real population medians can be much lower than folklore suggests.
Use the range to plan money, housing, veterinary access, and succession—not to promise an age. Then focus on the practical work: appropriate nutrition, movement, enrichment, hazard control, and prompt professional care.
